Komplex Magazin

Komplex, the corporate publication of Halter AG, is now also available as an online magazine. The publication deals with issues relating to urban development, architecture, real estate and capital, planning and construction. The diverse content in the form of reports, interviews, in-kind contributions and columns should make a relevant contribution to the current discourse. Its contributors include well-known authors, experts and industry insiders as well as photographers, illustrators and filmmakers from Switzerland and abroad.

Journalistic templates

Templates and modules are custom made for different journalistic purposes. Interviews have Q & A sections and large quotes. Architectural history has a chronicle navigation. Galleries and image slider focus with a black background on the best presentation of images. Design topics give space for presenting the design pieces. Next to special modules, all common modules such as headlines, leads, images and plain text can be added or even mixed together in a custom template.

Flexible header system

The CMS allows the editor to choose from different header styles for his or her article. You can select from two different text headers, one portrait header and an image/video header.

Design pattern

For a magazine page, the main focus must be on the legibility of the body text. We chose Libre Baskerville, a web font optimized for body text. It is based on the American Type Founder’s Baskerville from 1941, but it has a taller x-height, wider counters and a little less contrast, that allow it to work well for reading on-screen.

In contrast, the display font Chiswick Grotesque appears for headlines, leads, statements – for everything except the copy. Chiswick Grotesque is powerful and often cruder in style than printing types, with its round, geometric bowls exhibiting an industrial aesthetic. Its novel appearance makes it well suited to a variety of graphic design and editorial design applications.

In addition to the striking typography and the rich image layout, the GUI elements with their simple, clear shapes and their sparse usage take back in their form. Icons are rarely used. Buttons and links are represented by word marks. Only the cobalt blue color, the only GUI color used, makes an accent on the page layout.
